Before Your Marketplace Launch, Audit the Claims on Every Product Page

Scope: US and EU marketing; category and national rules vary

“Clinically proven.” “Eco-friendly.” “Guaranteed safe.” These phrases may help a product page sound persuasive, but they also create questions your supplier’s standard test report may not answer.

Ecommerce product listing compliance is a legal and operational review of the claims buyers actually see. It should cover text, images, packaging and sponsored content together.

Build a claim-and-evidence register

List each material claim and the evidence supporting it. Identify which product version the evidence covers and any limitations. An internal opinion, competitor listing or unsupported supplier statement should not be treated as independent substantiation.

Check implied claims too. A medical-looking image, certification-style badge or comparison chart can communicate a message beyond the literal wording.

The FTC’s advertising guidance explains that advertising claims must be truthful, non-deceptive and appropriately supported. Product categories and specific claims can trigger additional requirements. FTC advertising and marketing guidance.

Review the market, not just the language

An English listing can target US, UK and EU consumers while encountering different rules. Identify the markets where the offer will appear, the product category and any special labeling or warning obligations.

Do not copy a competitor’s wording as evidence that a claim is permitted. Platform acceptance is also not a legal approval.

Check ownership and permission

Confirm rights to photographs, videos, brand references and comparison materials. Keep licenses and supplier permissions organized, and verify their scope. Permission to resell a product is not automatically permission to reuse every marketing asset.

Control later edits

Assign an owner for changes made by agencies, affiliates and marketplace staff. Archive approved versions and re-review claims when the product or supporting evidence changes. A compliant launch can become an unsupported listing after a casual optimization edit.
